GENERAL
Semi contact fighting
is a continuous sparring competition with breaks only for equipment repair,
injury attention or warnings from the referee.
COMPETITION LANGUAGE
The official language
for continuous contact fighting is strictly English.
COMPETITION COMMANDS
Fight! - At the beginning
of the fight and after any interruptions.
Break! - The fight
is immediately ceased and may only be resumed after the command of "fight"
is given by the referee.
RING DIMENSIONS
- Competition
should be held on a gym floor with the fighting area clearly marked
off with tape or in a ring.
- The fighting
area in a gym or ring should be 20 x 20.
WEIGHT CLASSES
As per individual
tournament registration
PROPER ATTIRE
Every fighter must
wear a clean uniform. This consists of "gi" pants (ankle length).
The tops should either be a shirt with school or organization emblem (no
tank or muscle shirts) or "gi" top. Final decision rests with
the officials as to acceptable attire.
SAFETY EQUIPMENT
- A sparring
match may only be carried out if the fighters are wearing complete safety
equipment. This consists of: padded gloves of sufficient caliber which
cannot be pushed out of shape or broken, foam dipped foot pads , mouth
guard and a groin protector for men.Safety equipment has to be approved
prior to the commencement to the match by the center referee.
- Fighters
may not wear anything which may cause an injury: rings necklaces , watches,
ear-rings, etc.
MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical constitution
of the fighter should be determined once a year by a physician.
Fighters or their
legal guardians or parents are responsible for their own health insurance.
AUTHORIZED FIGHTING
Both hand and foot
techniques must be used during the entire fighting period . Hand and foot
techniques are only recognized when they clearly show the intention of
the contestant to, and successfully hit the opponent.
AUTHORIZED TARGETS
The following parts
of the body may be attacked using the permitted fighting techniques.
1) . Head (front
and side)
2). Torso (front
and side).
3). Leg, above the knee (front and back).
UNAUTHORIZED TECHNIQUES
Prohibited are:
- Attacks
to the back of the head/neck, throat, back, joints and groin.
- Attacks
with the knee, elbow, head butts, thumbs and shoulder.
- Turning
ones back to the opponent to avoid contact, running away, falling
down to avoid contact and ducking ones head below the knee.
- To attack
an opponent who is already down with one knee or hand touching the floor.
- To leave
the ring.
- To belittle
or insult the referee or opponent or behave in an un-sportsman-like
manner.
- Fighting
after the "break" command has been given.
Violations of these
rules and regulations may, depending how grave they are, may lead to a
warning, or even disqualification.
DURATION OF A
MATCH
1. Duration of the
matches is one - 1&1/2 or 1 minute match.
2. The fight should only be interrupted if there is an injury, if the
safety is not in order or if a severe penalty is in order.
3. If the fight is stopped due to injury, then the referee should decide:
- who caused
the injury.
- whether
it was intentional.
- if it
was self caused.
4. If the injury
is not intentional and the fighter cannot continue, the winner is the
uninjured fighter.
SCORING SYSTEM
1. Every match is
separately evaluated by each judge. The evaluation of each match should
be made according to:
- The number
of targets hit.
- The effectiveness
of the attack.
- The deliverance
of clean technique.
- Clean
fighting style.
- The overall
impression of the athletic performance.
6. Criteria for warnings:
- Excess
contact.
- Unclean
fighting style.
- constant
turning of the back to the opponent.
- too little
technique.
- Prohibited
techniques.
- Un-sportsman-like
conduct.
7. A fighter shall
receive only one warning. Upon the next infraction, disqualification will
be awarded depending on severity of the infraction.
8. A close fight is to be judged by overall impression and not by considering
the single target hits.
9. At the conclusion of the fight the judges must render a decision. They
must choose a winner. If all is even , then the fighter with the better
technique strategy or who has shown the best defense is to be chosen.
DECISIONS
The following decisions
could bring a fight to an end:
1. Winner by forfeit.
If the coach or fighter no longer wishes to continue, then the fight is
stopped and the opponent is declared the winner. This is done by throwing
in the towel by the coach or by the fighter raising one arm
2. Referee stops the match. A fight may be stopped because of fighting
or defensive inability, or insubordination. The winner is decided by the
referee.
3. Injury. If the fight is stopped due to injury, then the referee must
decide if the injury occurred through allowed or prohibited techniques:
- If prohibited
techniques were used, then the injured fighter is the winner by disqualification.
- If allowed
techniques were used and the injury was self caused then the uninjured
fighter wins by forfeit.
3. Disqualification.
After a single warning from the referee, and depending on the severity,
a fighter may be disqualified and his opponent declared the winner. Infractions
that may warrant disqualification with or with out a warning include but
are not limited to:
- Excessive
contact.
- Hitting
after the bell or the command "break".
- Un-sportsman-like
conduct.
- Insubordination.
- Unclean
fighting style.
OFFICIALS
1. the fighting jury
consists of:
- Referee.
- Three
judges.
3. the ring staff
consists of:
- Timekeeper.
- Score
keeper.
- First
aid attendance.
CENTER REFEREE
The referee is the
absolute sovereign during the fight.
He must have the
experience to distinguish and interpret intentional and unintentional,
serious and less serious infractions. He must have the experience to render
immediate decisions on warnings and disqualification.
He should express
this through clear behavior, speech and gestures. He is responsible for
the fight and its adherence to the rules.
His responsibilites
are:
- Before
the match he must be certain that the three judges are ready and in
their proper place.
- He must
make sure the contestants are properly attired and are equipped with
the mandatory safety equipment and that it is of good repair. He must
make sure the fighters are not wearing any jewelry and have on clean
uniforms. He must make sure the fighter lined up on his right has a
red flag attached to his belt indicating he is the "red" fighter.
He must make sure this fighter returns to this position at the end of
the match for the decision.
- He begins
the fight by having the contestants bow to each other and to him.
- His commands
consist of "fight and break". In case the contestants did
not hear his "break" command and do not immediately react,
he should warn them by slapping both contestants on the shoulder as
a warning to respect his commands.
- The referee
must remain close to the contestants in order to make quick decisions
and possibly intervene and separate them.
- A warning
must be loud and clear to the contestant. The referee must point a finger
directly at the fighter and state "warning for_________"!
He should inform the fighter that he runs the risk of disqualification
for another infraction. He should administer warning in a stern manner.
- Only
the referee can administer warnings or disqualification.
- To declare
the winner, the referee brings both fighters to the center of the ring.
He raises the winners hand and pulls the contestants together to shake
hands in a sportsmanlike manner.
JUDGES
- A match
should be evaluated by three judges. They should remain separated and
seated around the ring.
- The judge
should be fair and non-partisan and judge each contestants performance
to the best of their ability.
- There
may not be a tie. A close match is to be judged by overall impression
and not just by the single targets hit. The judge must render a decision.
They must choose a winner. If all is even, then the contestant with
the better technique, strategy, or who has shown the best defense is
to be chosen.
- The judges
may not converse during the match.
