A) Tournament Rules
No striking at your opponent with any part of the body
Submission for children under 12 (No leg attacks).
No biting, fish hooking , hair pulling or eye gouging
No fingers/ hands inside the cuffs of the opponents gi as a way of holding.
No techniques that involve bending or attempting to break fingers or toes or the small joints.
No twisting techniques. Techniques which apply pressure to the joint as a result of twisting. ( ie. ankle twist, knee twist, etc.)
No slamming of opponent or suplex (throwing to the ground as a means to pass the guard.)
No refunds or withdrawals. If you compete or register in an event no refunds or compensations will be given. It is very difficult for volunteers and co-coordinators to fairly resolve this situation. Therefore competitors are pre-advised of this ruling.

B) Technique Summary:
Striking with any part of the body is prohibited. Competitors found to be with intent to strike or cause harm to their opponent will be disqualified and asked to leave the venue. The following techniques are permitted.

Chokes:
Any choke that renders the opponent into submission. Chokes can be applied with either the arms, legs or with clothing. Competitors can not apply chokes by directly squeezing opponents throat with hand or pushing against throat to cause loss of breath. Ways of submission can be from side, front, and from behind.

Joint Locks:
Any technique where pressure is applied against a joint forcing opponent to submit. Competitors are permitted to use standard arm locks, inverted arm locks, shoulder locks, wrist locks, foot locks, and straight knee locks. Techniques which require twisting of the joint are prohibited. We the promoters feel that we would rather have our competitors walk home healthy than limp home sore. Competitors are not allowed to figure four the leg in an attempt at an ankle lock.

IF YOU CANNOT ESCAPE FROM A TECHNIQUE AND ARE EXPERIENCING DISCOMFORT, SUBMIT BY VISIBLY TAPPING THE GROUND OR OPPONENT. We encourage sportsmanship and competitive spirit, so please if you feel that your move or application is in any way going to harm your opponent carefully monitor your opponents reaction.

C) Matches:
Each match will be 5 minutes in length with no overtime, under 13 years is 2 minutes. The referee will give an overview of the rules to the whole division at one time, at which time you can ask questions. When called to your match, the referee will remind you of the basics. Competitors will begin their match on their feet and then instructed to engage. As this is a grappling tournament, competitors will not be separated once the match goes to the ground unless submission occurs or time expires. Should you fall outside the ring, the ref will stop the time and tell you to maintain your position at which point he/she will drag you back to the center and start time again. In the event that a category is cancelled, the heaviest competitors from the division will be assigned to the higher weight division and lighter being assigned to the lower weight level. Semi final winners will fight for first and second place, while semi final losers will fight for third and fourth.

D) Attire and safety equipment
Mouth guards, kneepads and groin protectors are recommended. No protective gear shall contain metal or hard plastic substances of any sort. No adhesive, rough, torn or loose equipment will be permitted. Competitors with long hair should tie it behind their head. The nails must be filed properly and cut short. Proper hygiene is in order. No jewelry is permitted while competing
A freshly washed traditional martial arts gi, in full must be worn. If your clothing becomes bloodied or torn, you will be asked to replace it immediately or forfeit the match.

E) Skill level break down:
The essence of any competition relies on the fairness of the contest. We encourage competitors to enroll at the skill level they feel will offer the highest challenge. By enrolling in a division that is easy for you, you not only deny competitors a fair match but a chance for you to test your true abilities.

Novice: White Belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with or without Two stripes. Judo yellow and orange belt.
Those competitors who have limited experience with grappling. Usually someone in this level has been practicing for up to 6 months. Competitors here have a limited number of techniques on the ground and really have no previous wrestling experience. Regardless to your ranking in any other Martial Art, your amount of focus on grappling is important. Should you not practice grappling regularly, this is your skill level. In addition, individuals with wrestling experience not at a competitive level qualify at this level. If you have ever taught grappling or competed in public events where grappling is involved you do not qualify in this division.

Intermediate: White with Two or more Stripes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Under Brown belt in Judo. Wrestlers with tournament experience at the high school level.
Competitors here find themselves with the ability to feel very comfortable with grappling. Individuals possess a fair amount of techniques to reverse, control and submit their opponents. Individuals here generally train anywhere from 6 months to two years. Competitors who have previously won a novice division must enroll in this level. Wrestlers with tournament experience and provincial ranking should enroll here. Grappling experience must be possessed but not yet refined. If you have competed in public events where grappling is involved (NHB) you must register here or higher.

Advanced: Blue belt or higher in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Brown belt of higher in Judo. Wrestlers with provincial and national ranking.
Competitors here have been grappling for quite some time. Knowledge of various ground techniques is substantial. Tournament experience is sufficient, and training is plentiful. Intermediate winners should consider enrolling here. Competitors do not necessary need to possess the above qualifications but must consider their opposition will be well versed in grappling and have years experience behind them.
As this is a growing tournament we have designated advanced as a blue belt and higher. However, we have full intentions to create Purple belt divisions should we obtain enough entrants. Please call us with your intentions early so that we can tell other potential entrants of the existence of a purple belt division.

H) Scoring:
At the conclusion of the match where no submission has been achieved, the winner will be determined by the most points. Points will be awarded based on the following criteria.

Techniques qualifying for points:
Complete Sweep (and come over from the bottom)
When a competitor sweeps or flips his opponent, using his legs reversing his own position from the bottom to top (when opponent is your guard and you reverse )

Reversing the position
When competitor is able to successfully reverse the position and maintain it. ie. Escape the mount, reversing the cross mount. must be for 3 seconds

Perfect Throw or takedown
When a competitor offensively ( using a throw or shoot) forces his/ her opponent to the mat from the standing position. Offensive fighter must be in control and in stable position for points to be awarded. If a throw is attempted but thrower loses balance by either opponent pulling them down or from poor technique or throw being accidental, no point swill be awarded. Single and double legs qualify as a takedown.

Knee on the Belly
When a competitor is able to place one knee on opponents torso and maintain control for a minimum of 3 seconds. Points for this can only be achieved once. Competitor can not place knee on belly, then remove then place again to achieve additional points.

Pass the Guard
When opponent is on his/ her back with legs around competitor. Competitor is able to get around the legs and establish a cross mounted position. Competitor must have complete control in cross- side mount for 3 seconds. Should competitor be past the legs but unable to get the the cross mount, no points awarded. (ie your guard is passed but you roll to your knees).

Achieve and maintain mounted position
When competitor is able to successfully be on top of opponent with legs straddled and both feet and knees on the mat. Legs must be unobstructed and on the ground. Mount can be either when opponent is on his/ her back or stomach. If you are mounted on your opponent that 4 points, if he/ she rolls to their stomach and you are still mounted that's 4 more points. If you then achieve hooks that's an additional 4 points. Should one hand be under a leg when mounted, this is not considered a mount.

Taking the back
When competitor is able to be on opponents back with both feet securely hooked in. Feet must be hooked in both legs for points. Attempt at choke does not achieve points unless results in submission.

Points for Brazilian Style
2 Points
-Complete Sweep (and come over from the bottom )
-Reversing the position
-Perfect Throw or takedown
- Knee on the Belly
3 Points
- Pass the guard
4 Points
-Achieve and maintain mounted position
-Taking the back

Submission will win the match regardless of points. Submission is achieved when opponent visibly taps out (either by tapping opponent of mat with hands) due to inability to escape technique that results in a degree of discomfort.
In the event of a tie in points, advantage will be determined. The referee has absolute and final decision.
-any take down without technique
-any attempt at choke, arm lock, or near submission
-reversal of fight without technique
-person with more aggressive stance.

Important note: Should a competitor have a dominate position for the duration of the match (guard, top cross mount etc.) and fail to win by submission or points, the victory may be awarded to his/her opponent based on inability to utilize dominate position. As well in open class where weight difference is considerable and tied in points, victory may be awarded to the smaller competitor based on superior technique to neutralize bigger opponent (or failure of heavier competitors to use weight to his/ her advantage).

A competitor will be disqualified from the match if he/ she intentionally tries to injure his / her opponent by twisting the neck or by lifting his opponent and throwing him on his back of his neck to the ground (suplex) etc. or where there is an infraction to the tournament rules. Warnings and potential loss of points for competitors intentionally rolling out of the ring to avoid an ankle lock or demonstrate a lack of desire to engage in combat.
